Dissington Hall Wedding Photography - Vicki and Lee's Wedding (the one on the radio)

So, the New Year was only a few days old, my Christmas decorations were already packed away and stored back up in the loft and we were still working our way through the last scraps of festive food and nibbles. What's the perfect way to kick out the New Year sluggishness? Yup, a wedding!

Vicki and Lee's wedding ceremony was going to take place at the beautiful St Bartholomew's Church in Newcastle followed by reception at the stunning Dissington Hall in Northumberland. In the run up to their big day, they had been a photographer's dream customer. Plenty of ideas being thrown my way, open to suggestions from me and most of all very enthusiastic about their images.

I arrived at Vicki and Lee's house for the bridal prep shots and immediately found myself double taking. Having been welcomed into the house by Vicki, she disappeared upstairs and then reappeared but had managed to get changed in the blink of an eye from her tracksuit into a dark blue gown. I was about to comment on the speed when I thought I was starting to see double! Yup, Vicki has a twin sister! "Meet my twin" she said with a chuckle.

Upstairs there was the usual commotion with all the bridesmaids getting ready and downstairs in the sitting room, Vicki's dad sat quietly, nervously working through his speech. I gave my usual advice of "You'll be fine, everyone is on your side so just relax"....words which had helped me through a best mans speech the previous May.

With all the shots done that I needed, I made my way over to St Bart's. The last time I had shot there it had been a summer wedding. In the winter, the church looked just as beautiful, but the grounds looked bigger somehow without all the leaves on the trees. Lee was already inside chatting to the vicar, who was introduced to me and said "You'll be Rev. Penfold's son." So I had the vicar on my side straight away. Lee was clearly nervous but with the ushers and best man arriving he started to calm down and began getting everyone sorted.

It was around this point when people started talking about hearing about the wedding on the radio. Lee thanked me for the shout out...I honestly didn't know what he was talking about at first but then the penny dropped. Earlier that morning I responded to Real Radio's Facebook status asking what everyone was doing that day. I posted a reply saying I was photographing Vicki and Lee's wedding. I didn't think for a second they'd actually read it out on air. Seems like most of the guests heard it too.

With everyone settling down inside the church, Vicki arrived. The sun was shining as Vicki walked from the car to the church doors. It was breathtaking as she stood in the doorway with the sun shining in from behind her, creating a superb silhouette.

The ceremony itself was quite simple with the usual mixture of laughs and warm heart felt moments. There's something about St Bart'. I always get lost looking at the woodwork of the ceiling and the stone arches. And with the sunlight streaming in, it made it look so much more magical than normal.

After the ceremony, confetti and bubbles we headed over to Dissington Hall with me leading a convoy of 4 cars of guests.....on the A1 Western Bypass I did lose myself while singing along to Chesney Hawkes (on the radio, not my music collection). I'd completely forgotten I had people following!!!! Thankfully nobody got lost.

The Hall still had the Christmas decorations in place. If you've never been to Dissington Hall before I suggest you go over and have a look. It's amazing. A Georgian style hall set in the middle of rural Northumberland surrounded by trees and parks. And with the late afternoon sun shining on it, it looked haunting! Mulled wine was on offer for the guests so there was the smell of cinnamon wafting around mixed with the smell of smoke from the open fire.

All the nerves had gone by now and the speeches were given before the meal. There were a couple of head in hand moments for Lee in the speeches (I won't embarrass him anymore so won't retell the stories). But the moment to savour for Lee during the speeches was a card being read out......from Alan Shearer. His face was a picture. Speeches done, Vicki and Lee settled down to the meal, beaming!

Vicki and Lee - I hope you had an amazing time on your honeymoon in Australia. Thank you for asking me to capture your special day. It was an absolute pleasure to get to know you over the months. Have a fantastic future together

A Real Wedding Story: Hannah and Dan's Wedding in Rugby

February 4th sees Jamie Penfold Photography celebrating it's 4th birthday as a fully fledged business. Before that I was mainly capturing weddings of friends and family but as time went on their friends were starting to ask me to capture their weddings and so on and so on and eventually I made the decision in late 2007 to formally set up the business. At that point I still had no real desire to give up my full time job and become a full time professional photographer. I knew I loved working behind the camera but doing it full time? However, that all changed in January 2009 with Hannah and Dan's wedding.

I've said before, I don't have a favourite wedding which I've captured. But some are more special to me for one reason or another. And this was the case with Hannah and Dan. When I was at middle school, me and Hannah's brother Mark were best friends, so I'd known Hannah since she was knee high to a grasshopper. But over time we all went our separate ways. Fast forward 20 years or so to the spring of 2008 with me starting to get the appetite for running this fledgling business. Hannah drops me a line to say she was getting married in the January and wanted me to capture her wedding for her....in Rugby!

This was a massive opportunity for me as they were getting married in a huge church, lots of guests and above all it was outside the North East. They were taking a massive risk on using me as, at the time, I felt I was still finding my feet as a wedding photographer. Don't get me wrong, I'd had a camera with me nearly every day since I was 8 and knew a camera inside out. This was my first BIG paying wedding. But after a lot of thought I said I'd be delighted and honoured to do it.

The day itself was superb. It was freezing, not that anyone noticed. The church was cathedral like and beautifully ornate. There were feather boas and candles and all sorts of music memorabilia around the marque where the reception was taking place and the atmosphere was electric. I realised half way through the day that for the first time I actually felt like a pro photographer. I had the confidence and the knowledge and this is something I think I really could do for a living. There was something else (which some people might find trivial)...my beloved West Ham United were playing that day and not a million miles from home either. When your wife turns to you and says "You've not asked for the score once! Are you ok?" you know that you're into something good! It's not often I forget all about West Ham!

So, as I reached the birthday milestone, I thought I'd go back to where it really started for me and asked Hannah and Dan to tell you all about their day in their words.

Date of Wedding: 24/1/2009

Venue: St Marie’s Catholic Church, Rugby; TheWoodhouse Inn, Princethorpe

Tell me about yourselves: How, when and wheredid you meet?

Oh dear! It was 6years to the day that we got married, so 24/1/2003. We were both drunk, it was late and he wasstaring through a window of the pub at me – he had spotted me but wasn’tallowed back in as it was closed. Myfriend was the bouncer’s girlfriend and so we were allowed to stay in till hecould drive us home. A particularlyhorrid, cheap and sticky pub! As itturned out, we’d been at the same primary school (I actually used to live tenminutes down the road from him as a small child) but with me being 9 monthsolder than him, never knew each other. He was in my home town studying at the University and so we finally met– no way was that chance J We have rarely been separated since.

When did you get engaged? Who proposed, whereand how?

Dan did on 6/10/2007 – We’d had anightmare with my eternity ring he’d bought for my birthday in July 2007, andwe’d had to return it twice to the shop. We were living apart (house move, new jobs early, complicated!!) and hecame to stay the weekend. I’d called himthat morning to ask, realising I hadn’t spoken to the jewellers for a while,whether they’d called him to say my eternity ring was ready for collection. He went quiet and I apologised, thinking he’dpicked it up and wanted to surprise me with it! He rocked up later that day and thrust a box at me saying ‘oh before Iforget…’ then carried on getting his coat off etc. Completely oblivious, I was saying ‘oh,they’ve wrapped it up in a gift box… oh how sweet there’s a new ring box, youdid tell them I had the original didn’t you?’ Then opened the box and it wasclearly an engagement ring. I didn’twant to jump the gun after hoping for so long, so I shakily asked ‘ummm why have I got this?’ (I kind of expected himto say he’d had to order a different ring as the other wasn’t available and Ihad misunderstood!!). His response, ‘cosI want you to marry me, fool’ led to great fits of weeping and laughing, andonly later did he ask whether that was a yes J We celebrated with achippy tea and Moet – that’s now our traditional celebration supper!

Did you have a particular theme/colour for yourwedding?

Fuchsia Pink and deep purple – we had aheavy rock disco, no cheese! Except thecheese I requested of course. It’s not adisco without my favourite songs from 90s dancing with the girls! But otherwise it was heavy metal, rock andclassic tunes. I moshed in 4 inchstiletto heels and my dress for four hours J

Describe your dress. How long did it taketo find and where did you get it from?

I actually had a dress given to me by my mother in law – very plain and simpleand was really a blank canvas for me to embellish – she hadn’t worn it to herwedding a few years before due to illness, she’d chosen a different outfit. I went dress ‘trying on’ with nointention to buy because, well every girl should have that experience! I was only looking for ideas but my mumwouldn’t let me leave the shop without buying the sample dress I tried on. I’m just glad it was in the sale! It was A-line with a small train, embellishedwith seed pearls and diamante jewels in clasps which looked like shootingstars, very wintry which worked well. Ithas spaghetti straps – big busted girls need that safety net!

Groom’s outfit: What kind of outfit did you haveand what colour. Did you hire or buy it and where did you get it from?

We were not quite shoestring level but certainly on a budget. We had never wanted the whole monkey suitsand tradition thing. The men all woreblack suits and a purple shirt and my husband wore a slim fitting black suitand a bright fuchsia shirt, matching the theme of the wedding, my flowers andshoes! He needed a really good suit sowe got a lovely one from Next which fitted really well. All the shirts were from there too and allthe men wore a simple wide black tie in a Windsor knot. Doing it this way looked so striking and wasway more like ‘us’ – and save a few hundred pounds!! The men all wore their own suits – my onlystipulation was that they were plain black.

How many people did you have in the bridalparty? What did they each wear? Did you hire or buy them?

There were the two of us, four ushers (a brother and a friend from each side),four bridesmaids (two adult and both 7 months pregnant, two of my nieces), andour best woman who I bought a beautiful satin Karen Millen dress in the exactcolour of the men’s purple shirts, and she wore a black bolero. We bought simple black party maternity dressesfor my adult bridesmaids and party dresses for the girls, and they all had amatching fuchsia sash to tie the theme in. With it being winter, they all had furry boleros too! Almost everything I go was from the internet. I avoided wedding shops etc like the plagueas I knew I’d spend!!

What flowers did you choose for the bouquets,buttonholes and corsages? Did you have other flower arrangements and tablecenterpieces? Where did these come from?

I’m not a fan of wedding flowers, I shallbe honest. They get in the way, they wilt and die and cost hundreds ofpounds!! Our buttonholes and my bouquetwere from Sarah’s Flowers (artificial – but foam based so looked and felt real)and I was able to design my own bouquet with feathers and diamante. I bought single stems of the same flowers andmade the button holes myself. Ourcentrepieces were hurricane lamps with huge church candles and white sand, withwhite feather rings around the base. Wehad black tablecloths so they really stood out.

What type of ceremony did you have? Wheredid the ceremony take place and how many people attended?

It was a full catholic nuptial mass, about the same length as a footiematch! It was at St Marie’s RC Church inRugby - where Dan was baptised and usedto serve as an altar boy - and about 100 people came.

What type of wedding rings do you have?

Palladium – harder and shinier thanplatinum, but there is more of it in the earth’s crust so cheaper! Plain, and dan’s is really flat so it’scomfortable to wear. We had our weddingdate in roman numerals engraved on the inside, which was a theme of the weddingand was on everything.

Did you have a cake? What style did you have?What flavours?

We had a very simple cake, I wasn’t bothered but my in laws insisted! Plain white, three tiers, with a snowytheme. I found a beautiful figurine of acouple embracing which we used on the top and planned to keep, but the catererslost it after taking it away to clean it. We have since found an exact replica. It was lemon sponge with lemon curd and buttercream.

Where did you hold your reception? What made youchoose that venue?

At the Woodhouse Inn, where Dan’s mum and stepdad married in 2004. They’d recently opened some very hi techmarquees and the space was perfect. Weloved the location and the grounds of the hotel.

What made you choose Jamie PenfoldPhotography? What is your favourite wedding picture?

Jamie has been a friend since I was a child and for me there was no question ofasking anyone else! Feeling comfortablewith a photographer is very important for me as I do not like being in front ofthe camera. I loved the fact Jamie wasgood at the reportage style, as I wanted something natural and free flowing andnot a huge round of pose after pose. Iwanted to enjoy the day and know the photographer would just be getting on withit! Jamie was so good at that, half thetime I didn’t notice him when he was right next to me! My favourite wedding picture (probablyselfishly!!) is one of my shoes! Noreally, it’s actually one of me and I’m on my own, backlit with a green and pinklight and I’m laughing at a cheeky comment from one of the ushers – it’s eveningand I’m there with a glass of wine and I remember being so relaxed andhappy. To be honest though there arejust so so many.

Where did you go on your honeymoon and where didyou stay?

We had a week in Lanzarote as a gift from the inlaws, but got vouchers forThomas Cook from our guests. We bookeda week in Egypt the next September.

What is your best memories of your big day?

Just seeing everyone having such a good time, and feeling on top of theworld! I never believed it would allreally happen until I got to the top of the aisle and he was there! Also the getting ready with my mum and thebridesmaids, and the anticipation!

What’s your top wedding day tip?

The lame old comment every wise oldmarried tells you – ‘enjoy every second, it goes by so fast’ – is so sotrue. But my main piece of advice is todo it your way. I dond’t mean gobridezilla! But if you want something onthe day – or want to do away with something everyone says is traditional, doit. It’s your day and it should reflectyou. I completely trashed thetraditional top table format to some people’s horror but it worked way betterfor us!

New Wedding Photography You Tube Channel for Jamie Penfold Photography

As you will probably notice, the blog is looking a little different. It is part of a redesign of all my online platforms for 2012. I hope you agree that the new, brighter looking blog reflects my images and work so much better than the moodiness of the black blog of 2010/11.

Part of my plans for 2012 is to develop my presence further in other areas of the web, so I have set up the Jamie Penfold Photography YouTube Channel here. And the first video is live now.

This will mostly showcase my wedding photography but from time to time I will also be using it to showcase other areas of my photographic work.

A Wedding Photographer's Year - My year in words and pictures

What a year!!! I can't believe it's gone so quickly. Those of you that know me well will know that 2011 started a bit oddly. 17 days into the new year I was made redundant from my job as a business advisor at Business Link. I knew it was coming ever since the spend review in October 2010, so I was prepared and ready. And I knew deep down that that was my big opportunity to make that big bold leap into self employment and follow my dream to become a full time photographer. Let's not pull any punches here, it's been tough the past 12 months adapting to a life of being my own boss and the pressures it has put on my family. But above all, it's been fun! And that's what I try to do with my photography...make it fun; for me and my customers.

2011 has been my busiest year yet since I began my journey as a photographer back in 2003. It seems like I have been on an endless stream of wedding fayres/shows, bridal consultations, meetings, networking events and phone calls. But the hard work has paid off. I have worked with some amazing people and I can safely say that, in terms of the weddings I've covered, every single couple has been a delight to work with. It's great to be able to come home after a day behind the camera with a smile on your face and to hear people saying things like "You clearly love what you do!". Damn straight! It's the best job in the World, not just capturing memories and emotions but moments, split seconds that could be lost forever but instead are saved for a lifetime.

I was asked the other day why I love being a photographer so much. And it dawned on me. It's not just because of my over-riding passion for capturing moments and making people happy. I'm a people watcher. "It's like sitting in Starbucks. I go to Starbucks to enjoy a cuppa but also to watch people. See their reactions, their expressions, their moods. I could sit in there all day people watching. And that's exactly the same with my photography. I watch people and capture their moods, emotions and expressions..."

I've really found my way of doing things this year. I have found an approach which works and which my customers love. I still don't claim to have a particular style. I'm a photographer who would like to think can adapt to most or any style depending on the job. As a friend said to me recently, "You had your wings clipped for too long. Now you've spread them and it shows".

My year hasn't just been taken up with wedding photography. I have had several opportunities to mix my photography with my other passion - music. I've covered several gigs this year and have been introduced to some real talent; Make No Mistake; Cohesion; B-Type; The Bolts; Teetha; Alaska Young and Pete Brown. I've also been at the other side of the camera a bit too whilst playing the drums with my new band Seven Seas of Whey Aye.

There's also been a bit of commercial photography mixed in there working with local businesses to provide not just imagery for their marketing material but also commissions to be installed as artwork in their offices. Working on the commissions was superb as it took me back to the sort of photography which I loved doing when I got my first SLR camera when I was 13. Getting out and about, capturing scenes from around the UK. It was almost like going back to the hobby side of photography.

And that in a nutshell was my year in words. It's certainly been an interesting one with it's fair share of ups and downs along the way. A huge thank you to all of you who have taken the time to read my blog, view my images and leave me such lovely comments over the past year. I'd also like to thank the following folks too for their amazing support, without which I doubt I'd be here right now posting this:

You have a new Facebook message! the iPhone piped up. Looking at my inbox I saw the name and thought "Wow! now that's a blast from the past!" When I saw Gayle's name I started trying to work out the last time I had seen her and realised I must have been about 10 years old!!!....24 years ago!

Turns out that through a chain of friends she knew a couple of my previous brides and was given my name, however, hadn't realised initially that I was the same Jamie that used to irritate her when I was younger! You see, her parents used to manage the Sun Hotel in Warkworth, Northumberland. My mum was their receptionist and my dad their barman in the evenings. Gayle was a couple of years above me at school but used to keep an eye on me while mum and dad were working. After mum and dad moved on to pastures new we fell out of contact....until this summer when she sent me a message out of the blue.

She started telling me about her plans for her wedding; relaxed, low key, no fuss. Simple church ceremony at The Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Amble followed by a get together for family and friends at the recently refurbished Wellwood Arms. She wanted images that reflected the mood of the day, very few formal shots and mainly shots of the guests enjoying themselves.....oh and there'll be kilts too! And it will be at night. Now, if you've read previous posts, you'll know that Amble is my old stomping ground, it's where I grew up and eventually got married before moving down to Tyneside. I couldn't wait to get back to the old surroundings.

As usual with all my couples, Gayle, Iain and I met several times to go through the plans. But invariably we ended up talking about old times, our parents and my father in law....who it turns out plays darts with Iain!

Come the big day, the skies were clear of cloud but it was bitterly cold! I really didn't envy Iain and his party wearing kilts! I had a quick look in at The Wellwood and was completely blown away by the old place. It had completely changed from the last time I was there about 10 years earlier! It was stunning! Real ales on the bar, wooden floors, beautifully decorated. And the wedding decorations were gorgeous too...I know it's a term that makes a lot of people shudder but verging on the vintage style.

Over at the tiny Sacred Heart Church, I was firmly put in my place by the priest. "You stand there, you don't move! I don't want any of that flash stuff in here and I certainly don't want you moving around!" Picture Father Jack mixed with Father Ted....but I warmed to him. An old school priest, set in his ways BUT with a wicked sense of humour. "I can promise you, there'll be no Runrig in here today" he confidently told Iain!

Gayle arrived and looked amazing. Her dad wowed everyone by walking her down the aisle despite being a double leg amputee. And that, for Gayle was the most nerve wracking moment. Iain was emotional throughout the ceremony (although he claims he had something in his eye). A nice, simple ceremony to match Gayle's wishes for the day.

Iain's brother, playing the bagpipes, led the guests out of the church and across to the Wellwood Arms where they were greeted by my old friend Pete Brown, crooning away in the back lounge. I first met Pete at a wedding I did down in Bishop Auckland and have remained in contact since. A seriously talented singer!

For the rest of the evening, Gayle and Iain mingled with their guests who were served fish, chips and mushy peas in cones followed by sticky toffee pudding (Pete and I can confirm the sticky toffee pudding was amazing!). Iain's son, Jamie, was superb in his role as best man and kept everyone entertained with his speech, calling Gayle "the evil stepmother"!!!

There were a lot of familiar faces from my past there. Some people I recognised but couldn't put a name to the face...and one person I completely didn't recognise who was a great friend from when I was small and walked passed several times without realising who they were! But I can't be blamed for that as we hadn't seen each other for over 20 years! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

For me, it was the perfect end to a perfect year. A nice way to finish my year with.....my first as a full time photographer. I couldn't have dreamt of a better way to conclude 2011 and I cannot thank Gayle and Iain enough.

Something to warm me up on this cold December evening

I was recently entered into the Wedding Industry Awards. At this relatively early stage of my photography career (yes, I've been a wedding photographer since 2003 but still class myself as a relative new kid on the block compared to some of my peers), I was hopeful but wasn't expecting to win the regional competition. Sure enough, I wasn't lucky enough on this occasion (next year maybe) but what I wasn't expecting was the comments my stunning couples left about me when they voted for me. I thought I would share them with you. They were all left anonymously so I have no idea who they are...although I think I can work a couple out. They were asked two questions: What was different about me and why did they book me.

Vicki and Lee's Pre-Wedding Shoot - Jesmond Dene

Vicki and Lee's pre wedding shoot took place on a beautifully crisp and sunny morning in October. We decided Jesmond Dene would be perfect as the leaves were still on the trees, they were a mixture of greens, golds and browns and the sunlight coming through them would be magical.

They were both complete naturals in front of the camera and a joy to capture. I can't wait for their wedding in January....look out for the blog for their wedding!

Victoria and Darren's Wedding in Gateshead (aka The One on The High Level Bridge)

"It's going to be quite low key, informal but special" said Darren when we first met up and he started describing his vision for his and Victoria's wedding. Darren was taking a very hands on approach with the wedding. They were both taking the lead with the arrangements and every question I asked was answered by both of them in unison.

My idea for the wedding photography was to use the inner city setting and give an industrial meets romantic theme. I had no idea though where to do the bridal shoot until a week or so before the big day. Darren and Victoria were happy for me to make the suggestions but I was stumped....that was until I saw Get Carter a week before the wedding. Everyone knows the car park scene, and God knows I've spent enough time at the now demolished structure taking photos. That would have been an ideal spot. But there is a scene where there is a chase along the High Level Bridge.....and that's when it hit me. The architecture of Stephenson's masterpiece was perfect....almost cathedral-like. I was going to use the lines, the arches and the changing light patterns to create something a bit different. I ran the idea past Darren and Victoria...."Go for it".

The day before the wedding I made a comment on Metro Radio's Facebook Page in response to their question asking what people were doing at the weekend. Next thing I knew I was live on air talking about wedding photography and my plans for the wedding the next day. "The High Level Bridge? Well that's different" was the response from DJ Brian Moore.

The big day arrived and at Victoria's mum's house there was the normal chaos you expect pre-wedding. Bride and bridesmaids ran around the house frantically looking for things that had gone missing, putting hair in place and "generally flapping" as Victoria's brother put it. He sat quietly, completely aghast at the commotion going on around him.

At St Patrick's Church, I was in for a real surprise. From the outside, it looks like any normal run of the mill inner city church. I ascended the stairs to enter the church, walked through the doors and was completely blown away by what lay before me. It was simply stunning. The church warden was there and said "Impressive isn't it?". The interior did not match the outside!

The priest then came over and gave me strict instructions about what I could and couldn't do. "And you only take two pictures of the register. Two and two only. No more!" he said. Well, you can't say fairer than that!

Darren paced about outside before coming in, joking with guests as they arrived, before he was told off by the priest for handing out the Order of Service.

I always talk about the emotion of the day. There was something electric here. Darren's jokiness soon changed to quiet calm....but underneath it all, you could see he was nervous. Victoria arrived and likewise, although very quiet, was clearly nervous.

As soon as Darren turned to look at Victoria, his face lit up and the emotion got the better of him as he read his vows out. Nothing a shoulder rub from his best man wouldn't sort out.

At the High Level Bridge, the sun shone through the ironwork. It was a cloudless day and strangely warm for October. The shadows were perfect and there was hardly a person in sight. Darren and Victoria, just like every couple before them, admitted they were a bit nervous about getting their photos done. You wouldn't have known it. They were naturals and were more than happy to pose for shots.

The reception was at The Elephant on the Tyne in Gateshead with great views over the River Tyne. The guests relaxed in the lounge before the wedding breakfast which was followed by the speeches. Darren's speech goes down as the longest Groom's speech I've witnessed. I thought he was joking when he showed me a folder full of paper, but nope, that was the speech.

45 minutes in, the manager came over to me "We need to tell him to wind up soon. We've got the band here waiting to set up!" The speech was straight from the heart, and didn't just acknowledge his love for Victoria, Darren acknowledged his love for Victoria's daughter, his parent's and his friends. At the same time though, it wasn't lost on anyone how long his speech was taking and the laughs and giggles got louder and louder as the speech went on. Eventually, the manager passed a note via the best man to give Darren a nudge. I've never seen a best man so relieved to be told he had to get his speech done quick sharp!

And with that, everyone retired to the bar and riverside while the main room was transformed and the band warmed up for the evening.

The first dance was to Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars and afterwards Darren and Victoria admitted it was the most nerve-wracking part of the day. However when the band started up with Wilson Pickett's Land of 100 Dances, Darren stood on the edge of the empty dance floor. He looked at me. I gave him a nod and he was off like a man possessed. Before she knew it, his mum was being dragged onto the dance floor! And that's how the night continued.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day and I hope Darren and Victoria had a blast in Gran Canaria for their honeymoon. All the best for the future guys and keep in contact!

Kate and Andy's Wedding at Langley Castle (aka the one where Jenson didn't win)

Lets go back a few years shall we? You see, it all happened one evening at Newcastle Arena during an ice hockey match. Being a big fan of the now defunct Newcastle Vipers and knowing a few of the guys involved at the club, I regularly wangled VIP tickets. I had managed to obtain several tickets for a big game and sent an email around my old office to see if there was any interest and I was pleasantly surprised to see 5 or 6 names come forward. At the game I took my usual seat at the back of the stand so I could stand and watch (I don't do sitting down at matches whether it's football, ice hockey or anything else!). I can't remember all the folks there but next to me was my old team leader and good friend Ian and in front were two colleagues from finance, Andy and Kate. I was totally engrossed in the game when I get nudged in the leg by Ian. "Are them two seeing each other?" he said pointing at Andy and Kate. I shrugged, "Don't think so. Why?". "I could have sworn I've just seen them kiss!" said a shocked Ian.

Over the years I think I have got to know Kate and Andy quite well through my time at the company I used to work at before going full time as a professional photographer. I knew they had a mutual love of Formula 1, so it came as no surprise that when they went for a short break to Monaco, back came the news that Andy had proposed next to the Grand Prix circuit.

When they asked me if I was available to capture their special day I wasn't going to say no. Their wedding was to be held at the stunning Langley Castle, my favourite wedding venue. We met regularly over the 12 months before the big day and what struck me was that Kate had a very definite idea about what she wanted in terms of her wedding photography and how she wanted her special day captured.

And then, sitting one evening, eating my tea, I was watching the local BBC News. I wasn't really paying attention to what was on when I saw Kate and Andy on the screen, walking hand in hand up the drive to Langley Castle. Donna Redfearn from North East Wedding Planners was doing a feature about the wedding industry, and as she was helping Kate and Andy with their wedding plans, decided to feature them.

So to the big day! Where to begin? Well, I suppose with the rain. My heart sank as I had so many plans for the photos which was to incorporate the stunning surroundings of Langley Castle. It's too good a venue to simply shoot indoors. More of that later!

Inside, Kate was getting make up sorted. "It all seems so real now you're here" she said as I entered the room to begin the bridal prep shots. The dress was hanging from a four poster bed and looked amazing. It would look amazing with the shot I had in my mind for later in the day.

Upstairs in the main function room, the place settings and tables were ready. And then I noticed the table names. Casino; Tunnel; La Rascasse....all the tables were named after corners of the Monaco Grand Prix. I was disappointed to find out that the special guest at Kate's hen-do would be turning up.....Jenson Button. Kate is a huge Jenson fan and was escorted round her hen-do by a life-sized cut out of the man himself. But there was no way Jenson was going to win today....Andy was the big winner.

To be honest, Andy was as cool as a cucumber. And when Kate entered the room his face lit up. They exchanged their own vows and looked so happy and so in love. They were a wedding photographers dream as their faces beamed!

It was still raining outside so we conducted group shots in the lounge and then the three of us had a wander around the castle. The shot I had in my mind I mentioned earlier worked a treat (see below). But we were still unable to get outside.

The speeches followed the wedding breakfast. The emotions of the day hit Andy during a heart felt speech. But it's safe to say Kate's mum stole the show when she read out an "apology" letter that an 8 year old Kate had left for her in her old bedroom.

As the speeches finished, the sun came out. So we had a mad dash outside. The shot Kate really wanted was of the two of them on the drive leading up to the castle. I was a bit worried to be honest as the light was fading fast. But, with a bit of patience and perseverance we got the shot that Kate was after.

And that was that! A long day....and a great work out! You've got to be fit to cover a wedding at Langley Castle with all the stairs they have there!!!

Shelley & Lee's Wedding at North Shields Registry Office (aka the one that marked the new beginning)

Let me take you back to March 2011. In fact , let me take you back to March 12th 2011. 6am to be precise. You'll be thinking "Why does he remember that time and date?". Well readers, that was when my alarm went off the morning after my last day in full time employment. Following the Government cuts in October 2010, my job as a business advisor was to be made redundant and for me, that meant one thing. Following my dream and passion and go full time as a photographer.

So there I was that Saturday morning, wide awake thinking "WHAT HAVE I DONE??!!!" and "Can I make this a success?" and "Where will the next referral come from?". Having been a wedding photographer since 2003 I was confident I could make the step up from being a part time, photographer to full time, pro. I have the skills and the confidence BUT the market was swamped, especially with "Uncle Bobs".

Sat in front of the Mac that morning I was working on my website when the phone went. "We're getting married in North Shields in September and we're after a photographer. Are you free?". I was, and I arranged to meet the couple later that day in our local Costa Coffee. And that's when I first met Lee and Shelley (and her mum). We instantly clicked, especially when we realised we all had a love of guitar based music and in particular metal.

Shelley described her plans for the wedding: small and intimate, no fuss and a black wedding dress. I was intrigued. She also explained she hated having her photo taken, she won't be the first and she won't be the last to say that to me. But Shelley REALLY hated having her photo taken.

Over the coming months I got to know Shelley and Lee well and come the big day in September 2011, everyone was at ease with the idea of having their photo taken....or were they?

Lee arrived at North Shields Registry Office to be met by a very happy me as I had been informed a couple of days earlier that the Registry Office had relaxed their rules about photography during ceremonies. Lee looked nervous though but as guests arrived and he got chatting he soon began to forget these. Shelley arrived soon afterwards in a stunning black gown! I was blown away! She looked amazing but admitted that she was still nervous about having her photo taken. To be honest, I think this is where I excel as a photographer; putting people completely at ease in front of the camera. A quick chat, bit of a joke and reassurance later and Shelley forgot all about the lens and shutter!

And so to the ceremony. The 20 or so guests assembled, Lee stood nervously playing with his fingers and as the doors at the back of the room opened, Shelley glided down the aisle to the sound of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". I was impressed. More proof if any was needed that every wedding is different and that there are more songs that can be used on a wedding day than the usual 5 or 6. I should also point out that I love Metallica.

The ceremony was short and sweet, with Shelley and Lee's eyes locked on each other throughout. Shelley got the giggles at times, especially when she got Lee's first and middle names mixed up. For such a small wedding, it was starting to pack a punch in terms of atmosphere and emotion.

After the ceremony I decided that we should congregate in the park up the road from the registry office to get photos done and to enjoy the autumn sunshine, away from the hustle and bustle of the registry office. For someone who hated having their photo taken, Shelley was a complete natural in front of the camera.

I was in for one more surprise though. At the Italian restaurant where the wedding party would be having their wedding breakfast, the wedding cake was already set up. Again, this was a break from the norm. A white multi tiered cake, with each tier off centre from the one below (still not sure how it didn't topple), black ivy icing decorating the cake and a winged vampire groom stood on the top.

Shelley walked in, looked at the cake, then me and said "You approve?" and smiled. I loved it! I always say that there is no such thing as a "normal" wedding. Every wedding is different, some more so than others.

Personally though, Shelley and Lee's wedding means so much to me, more so than they could imagine. This was the wedding that set me on my way as a full time wedding photographer. I cannot thank them enough!!!

Christina and Steven's Wedding in Sunderland and Ramside Hall (aka the one with the amazing first dance)

This was the second wedding of a very busy weekend. Having spent the day before running up and down the staircases of Langley Castle for Kate and Andy's wedding (images to come in a week or so once they're back from honeymoon), I woke on the morning of Chrissy and Steven's wedding feeling like I'd run a marathon.

At Chrissy's parents house there was the usual pre-wedding mayhem. The young bridesmaids Raegan and Lola were excitedly running around, while pageboy Matthew kept a beady eye on baby Luke, who was decked out in the cutest dinner jacket and dicky bow. Meanwhile older bridesmaids Kathryn and Natalie helped Chrissy get ready. The wedding dress was a stunning Amanda Wyatt gown.

The wedding ceremony would be held at St Matthew's Parish Church in Silksworth, Sunderland with a backdrop of blue skies...something the weather forecasters hadn't predicted! Steven and his "entourage" arrived, looking remarkably calm and collected, and as the guests arrived, he joked with friends, family and colleagues.

With Steven taking his place in the church, the wedding car arrived...a magnificent vintage Bentley which the driver had tirelessly polished earlier that morning, only have to re-polish after a short sun shower at lunchtime.

The emotions began to kick in as Chrissy entered the church. Fighting to hold back the tears she followed the bridesmaids down the aisle to be met by Steven who was grinning from ear to ear.

As the service began and the vicar started to speak a tissue was deftly past from hand to hand to Chrissy, who never took her gaze from the vicar as he spoke.

With early nerves set aside, Chrissy and Steven sat back to listen to a long sermon in which he gave various definitions of what love is from people such as Albert Einstein and the Love Is... cartoons.

All the while, little Lola played on a magna-doodle and then danced to each hymn.

With the ceremony done, and confetti thrown, everyone made their way to Ramside Hall Hotel, near Durham.

With the sun low in the sky, everyone congregated on the lawns outside the hotel for photographs before heading back inside the ballroom for an informal reception. Andrew, the best man, though was looking pale. Nerves had got the better of him and he was starting to worry about the best man speech. I could relate to this as I had been in a similar situation earlier in the year. No words of advice from myself or anyone else was helping.

Both Chrissy and Steven's dads gave short speeches, before Steven took to the floor to give a heart-felt and at times cheeky speech. With the dinner jacket on and microphone in hand you half expected him to start crooning like a member of The Rat Pack. And then it was Andrew's turn...his speech was simple and to the point. "To the bride and groom". And with that, the speeches were done.

Now, one of the first questions I ask when a couple book me is, "What will your first dance song be?" I'm a big music lover so I take great delight in listening to peoples musical ideas and preferences. Sure, I see a lot of dances done to Take That's "Greatest Day" or Lonestar's "Amazed" so when somebody throws a curve ball like Chrissy and Steven did, it makes for a pleasant surprise. I was expecting Elbow's "One Day Like This". So when Eclipse "Makes Me Love You" started banging out of the speakers I was blown away.

It was a refreshingly different, ad-hoc first dance and was great to watch (and photograph). And with that, my day was done. With the disco in full swing I left everyone to dance the night away.

Judith and Glenn's Wedding at Beamish Park Hotel (aka The one with the cars, sunshine, goldfish and football match)

OK, I admit it. When I look at the new fixture lists when they come out I do tend to look and see what weddings I'm covering are going to clash with big fixtures. The only problem is I'm a long suffering West Ham supporter. So how was I to know that the Tyne/Wear derby was going to clash with one of my weddings. The first I really knew about it was when Colin, the gentleman who was giving Judith away, mentioned it to me when I arrived at Judith and Glenn's house on the Saturday morning. More of the match later....

So, another sunny day without a hint of a breeze in the air. Judith and Glenn were getting married at Beamish Park Hotel, one of my favourite wedding venues owing to the beautifully bright and airy atrium the ceremonies take place in. At their house, there was the normal pre-wedding chaos with the three young bridesmaids, Elizabeth, Freya and Erin running around with excitement while the adults hurriedly tried to get everything and everyone ready. Judith arrived back from the hairdressers, chatted with her bridesmaid Kate for a bit, nervously smiled and went to finish getting ready.

Over at the hotel the room was decked in white chairs with bright pink bows. In the sunshine that was beaming in the pinks were so vivid. The harpist arrived, set up and then asked for the air conditioning to be turned off. This was going to be a warm one!

Glenn had mentioned to me during our final planning meeting that he was being driven to the hotel in his friends car. This intrigued me. I waited on the steps as some of the guests began to trickle in...and then I heard the dull roar of a powerful car engine. When it came into sight, you couldn't miss it.....I bright yellow Ferrari, followed by 2 Porches. The car park was beginning to resemble the Top Gear studio. Meanwhile, the men were busily checking who had a signal on their phones and whether anyone had access to the latest scores from The Stadium of Light. It soon became clear that this wedding party were all Newcastle United supporters. More of that to follow.....

Glenn was looking nervous as he took his place at the front of the atrium, Anthony, his best man, doing his best to keep him amused followed by a bit of micky taking from Mark and Barry, the two ushers. All four were decked out in white morning suits, Glenn with a matching white tie, the rest of the men with pink ties.

The bridesmaids arrived in a huge stretched limo followed by Judith and Colin in a beautiful new Rolls Royce. It was HUGE! Judith stepped out of the car to reveal a stunning lacy vintage wedding dress. She nervously smiled as she entered the hotel.

By this point the atrium was boiling! But this didn't seem to be noticed by the guests as Judith glided down the aisle to meet Glenn. The nerves evaporated. Judith later admitted she had to keep staring at Glenn's ear because every time she look him in the eye she felt she was about to lose it and she didn't want to cry. A beautiful ceremony was topped by the harpist playing and singing Sting's Fields of Gold.

The next surprise for me (and most of the guests) were the goldfish which were swimming in bowls in the middle of each table. I loved it....if only they would stay still long enough for me to photograph them.

Outside, doves were released while most of the male side of the wedding party were becoming more and more distracted with the events in Sunderland. I gathered everyone together on the steps of the hotel for a big group photo. No sooner had the picture been taken, a cheer went up from various parts of the group. Newcastle had scored.

And that was that. Meals and speeches finished and a bit of fishing done to re home the fish, the band warmed up for the evening reception and then the DJ introduced Judith and Glenn to the dance floor where they danced to Take That's Greatest Day, ably accompanied by Elizabeth.

Luanne and John's Wedding at Newcastle United's St James' Park(aka The one with all the sweets)

I sat having my breakfast on the morning of Luanne and John's wedding thinking that at last, the weather was nice outside. It was sunny, the wind was light and it was warm! Something of a rarity this summer.

When I arrived for the bridal prep images there was a quiet calm around the house. Luanne and her bridesmaids were giggling away while they got ready while the smaller bridesmaids flitted from room to room. As the time was getting closer for Luanne to leave for the church the nerves started to kick into gear. I left for the church with a few calming words which I hope helped.

If you haven't visited St Andrews Church in the centre of Newcastle I would strongly encourage you to. It's simply stunning. It's a small oasis amongst the new modern buildings that have grown up around it over the years. In the streets the buses whizzed past and shoppers were full of hustle and bustle. Yet in the church grounds it was quiet and peaceful. John and his best man and ushers were shuffling around by the church doors, John with an air of ultra-cool calmness about him.

With the church filling up, John took his place and shortly afterwards Luanne arrived wearing a stunning flowing dress, complimented by the purple of the dresses worn by the bridesmaids. Luanne's mum was waiting for her as she pulled up and that's when the emotions kicked in.

The service itself was a lovely, simple affair with a few jokes and quips dropped in by the vicar, some embarrassingly bad! It was then that I noticed John's best man, Gary, looking very nervous. His big moment was about to arrive and he couldn't decide where to put the rings - keep them in the box, put them in the trouser pockets, put them in the jacket pocket or slip them onto the little finger. It was a moment which made me chuckle as I had been in that position a month or so earlier at my best friend's wedding (I opted for the little finger for the record).

With the ceremony over Luanne and John left the church to be greeted by a shower of confetti (and a bouquet in the face from one of the little bridesmaids). The main wedding party then walked up to Leazes Park to have a bit of time out and allow the kids to use up some of their energy. All the way up to the park people were stopping to congratulate the happy couple.

Inside St James' Park, we gathered groups together in the stand for photos before the main wedding party embarked on a tour of the stadium for more photos. The reception was held in The Magpie Suite and the first thing that greeted you was a table full of cupcakes and sweets. Sure the kids were pleased to see the sweets but it was the reaction of the adults there (me included) which was great. Sherbet Flying Saucers (I lost count of the amount of times I heard someone say "I haven't had one of these for years"), strawberry laces, fizzy cola bottles....the list goes on. It reminded me of my days growing up in Amble and spending all my pocket money on sweets at The Deli. Needless to say even the staff were nipping over to the table every so often to pinch a sweet!

The reception was a very relaxed do, with a buffet followed by 3 very emotional, heartfelt speeches. I'm not actually sure Luanne got to eat anything as she was up and making sure she got to speak to everyone. She did mention a few days later that she did get a plate of food, put it down at her place, got talking to someone and when she came back a waiter had cleared her plate!

All in all, Luanne and John's wedding was extremely chilled out, warm and full of smiles. A short break away in Scotland followed by a sunny family break in Egypt followed the wedding. I hope you have a fantastic time Luanne and John. Thank you for a superb day.

Emma and Gary's Wedding in Sunderland at The Stadium of Light(aka the one at The Stadium of Light)

When I first met Emma and Gary they talked me through the plans for their wedding...stunning church, wacky vicar, route-master bus, reception at The Stadium of Light....the list went on. It sounded amazing. The idea was modern with a vintage twist. Emma was infectiously enthusiastic about everything.....Gary on the other hand was quite relaxed about everything. "Trust me, I'll be like this on the day" he assured me.

An early start on their big day saw me heading to Emma's parents house to start bridal prep pictures. The sun was out, a few clouds here and there and a light wind made for a great day. Emma and Gary's little girl Elizabeth was running around getting caught up in the pre-wedding excitement and resisted any attempts to get her to have a quick nap.

Over at Emma and Gary's house, Gary, the two best men and usher were fighting with braces and cuff links. Nerves were showing but all in all the four of them, Gary in particular were taking everything in their stride.

St Paul's Church in Ryhope look amazing in the lunchtime sun. The vicar was indeed a bit different. Jokey, approachable and above all pro photography...as long as I didn't get in his way. Inside the church Gary waited while Emma made her way through the church grounds to be met by Elizabeth at the church door. Emma's vintage dress glistened in the sun and looked stunning. As she walked down the aisle, Gary turned and looked awestruck. Meanwhile, Elizabeth strolled around the church with her toy doll blissfully unaware of what was happening around her raising chuckles from the congregation.

The ceremony was simple, the singing was passionate and a the vicar cracked some jokes. Such a refreshing approach.

Once at the Stadium of Light, everyone relaxed. With photos being taken in the changing room and the stands, the ground offered something a little different to the norm in terms of a backdrop for wedding photography.

One thing that particularly caught my eye during the reception was the donation being made to the Help our Heroes charity rather than giving people favours. I thought this was such a lovely touch especially with the best men and usher being in the forces.

With the evening guests congregating in the bright and airy Riverview bar at the stadium, Emma and Gary mingled before dancing into the night.

As wedding days go, this one was possibly the most relaxed wedding I've covered. I wish Emma and Gary (and Elizabeth) all the best for the future and hope they have a fantastic honeymoon at the end of July.

Lindsay and David's Wedding in South Shields and The Roker Hotel(aka the one with the weather)

Reading back through my previous posts it dawned on me that they are dominated by references to weather.....and this post is no different.

I first met Lindsay and David at a wedding show in Sunderland back in 2009 and between then and their wedding in June I feel like I've got to know them quite well. Following regular meetings I had in my mind how I intended the day to go and what shots I wanted to get.....group pictures on the sea front at Roker in Sunderland and bridal images in Roker Park.

However, mother nature had other ideas. I can cope with rain, but what we had on the day was close to monsoon. I've not seen rain like it for years. It was non stop from just before the wedding ceremony through to late in the evening....but more of that later.

I arrived at Lindsay's parents house mid-morning to be greeted by a scene I have become accustomed to over the years. Lindsay just back from the hairdressers frantically getting things sorted while trying to remain calm, dad running errands from house to house and mum getting panicky about timings. Meanwhile I got shots of flowers, invitations and jewellery while trying not to get in the way. I had a look at the dress and was blown away by it. A stunning white tie-back body with ruffled skirt. It glistened in the light shining through the window. It looked magical.

The ceremony was at South Shields Baptist Church. There waiting calmly was David. I'm not sure if he was nervous or not. If he was, he didn't show it. The church offered some interesting challenges. No central aisle, instead 2 aisles on each side of the church and a 360 degree balcony with bare wooden floors. The only real spot for me to get shots of David and Lindsay was from the balcony, however each footstep echoed loudly so I ended up spending the entire ceremony barefooted. Thank God I put clean socks on!

Ceremony finished, we were forced to conduct the group pictures in the church as there was no chance of getting anything done outside.

We made our way to The Roker Hotel in Sunderland and chanced a couple of shots on the sea front but the rain would not let up. This was the first wedding I had conducted at The Roker Hotel and I have to say, I was impressed. The staff there were brilliant and ably assisted me when I required them.

Later in the evening, there was a break in the weather so we quickly got the main wedding party together for some sea front shots before retiring to the bridal suite to get some shots of Lindsay and David together. Shortly after, I left them to dance the night away with Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 ringing in my ears.

My abiding memory of the day (apart from the rain) was the smile. Lindsay never stopped smiling once, beaming all day. Rain? What rain?

Frank and Pen, Oxfordshire (aka the one where the best man felt lost without his camera)

As a wedding photographer you are fortunate enough to see many different weddings. However you sometimes get completely caught up with the job in hand that you forget just how stressful and emotional the wedding day can be for the folks getting married and their guests.

So on Saturday I found myself in the position of being right there on the front line. I had the experience of being part of the wedding party as I was the best man. A unique feeling for me as I was at a wedding and was not the photographer.

I've known Frank for 16 years and were actually the first people each of us met when we started university. So when Frank asked me to be his best man I was shocked but delighted. So what was the first thing that I worried about? Nope, not the speech....it was being on the other side of the camera. "I hate having my photo taken" I told the photographer when he arrived at Frank's parents farm. I wish I had a pound for every time a bride/groom have said that to me and there I was saying it to our photographer on the day.

Next up was to check what cameras he and his assistant were using....Canon. So the Canon v Nikon banter started. But I promised myself that was as far as I would go and I wouldn't interfere with the photography process......easier said than done!

The weather was perfect. Sunny, but not too hot. The ancient little church in the village of Cuxham looked amazing and Frank seemed extremely calm. I spent the morning zipping between the farm, the reception venue and Frank and Pen's house making sure everything was sorted and ready. As we walked to the church I could see a hint of nervousness in Frank's expression but other than that he was fine.

Once in the church, Frank started laughing, turned and said "I can't believe I'm getting married". Something he had repeated over the previous 24 hours and his sister Jane had responded to by cheekily saying "Neither can I!" When the time came for Pen to enter the church I turned look while Frank, as promised, kept looking straight ahead to the alter. She looked stunning as she entered the church. I think I said "Wow" to myself, but I definitely remember turning to Frank, putting my had on his shoulder and said "She's amazing!" Unfortunately the vicar heard and told the congregation what I had said.

The service was packed full of emotion and laughs. And this was mirrored at the garden reception at Pen's mum's house. It was so relaxed, but I couldn't help get a little tense knowing I had a speech to do. In the time that I've known Frank I've never seen him happier and this showed in his speech. I've actually never seen him so emotional. For my speech, I decided to ease my nerves a bit by having a walkabout in amongst the tables as I spoke. Some of the gags came off a lot better than I had anticipated. And the pauses for the laughs helped me as I made could keep check on where I was in the speech. I struggled at one point as I tried to stop myself getting choked up when I told everyone what a superb friend Frank has been over the years. But I got through it OK.

Speeches done, we cranked the music up and danced the night away. I did comment to a couple of the guests that I felt naked being at a wedding without my camera....like superman without his cape and powers. As the evening progressed there were a lot of laughs and a few more tears.....actually, a lot more tears especially when I spoke with Pen late on in the evening and thanked her for making Frank so happy.

And that was that. My three best friends all married off. Frank on Saturday, Kerry a couple of weeks ago and Matt a few years earlier. We've all settled down and have families. As both Frank and Kerry said at their respective weddings....it all feels quite surreal. As Matt said at his wedding....does this mean I'm a proper grown up? In both cases, yup, it does. I love all three of you guys and am so pleased we've all stuck together over the years through thick and thin.

Pen and Frank - I wish you all the best for your lives together. It really was an honour to be your best man on your special day. You both looked amazing on Saturday and so in love. The day was perfect and I'll never forget it. Have fun on your break away and I'll see you soon

Kerry and Chris' Wedding - Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire (aka The One with the Best Friend)

I've known Kerry since we were 11 or 12 and have been best of friends since day one. So when she told me Chris has proposed I insisted that I did her wedding photography...luckily she was also insistent that I did it too! Any photographer will tell you that shooting your friends wedding brings about a huge amount of pressure. I always feel nervous before shooting a wedding but with Kerry and Chris, I have never felt pressure or nerves like it. You don't want to screw up for a friend.

I had been involved in the planning of the wedding from an early stage and knew just about all the plans for the day...I even attended the open day in York that the teepee company Papakata staged so that I could get a feel for their teepees and how Kerry and Chris' teepee would look and feel on the day. I'll come back to the teepee later.

On the big day, the venue, Rufford Old Hall, was bathed in sunshine. Despite the light breeze, it was still a very warm day. The purples and whites looked amazing in the sunlight as did Kerry and Chris. Kerry's dress was one aspect of the day I didn't know about. I had the opportunity a few weeks earlier to see the dress but asked not to see it....I think I wanted to get the impact. But my God, I was blown away when Kerry got out the car. She looked amazing. As she got out the car, the dress unfolded to reveal a flowing train. It glowed in the sunlight.

Inside the hall, I found Chris waiting with their little boy, Luke (who was a star all day). Chris was starting to look nervous. As he puffed out his cheeks the registrar asked everyone to stand, he turned and Kerry walked in bathed in the sunshine that was shining through the windows. I don't know why but it was only really at that point that I realised I was watching my best friend of just over 20 years getting married and I was right there at the front of the room with her. I've never seen Kerry look so happy and I couldn't have been prouder to be playing such an important part. My nerves evaporated.

I looked up from my camera at one point and had a quick scan across the front rows to see that there wasn't a dry eye there, the emotion broken slightly by some giggles as Luke did his best to climb through Chris' legs. I'll admit now, I had a wobbly chin moment. I thought I had got away with it, but Kerry later collared me to tell me she saw me wiping a tear away.

Ceremony over and photos taken in the stunning gardens surrounding Rufford Old Hall, the guest moved onto the stunning teepee where the reception would take place. This was one of the things I couldn't wait to see. Seriously, Papakata's teepees are amazing. The atmosphere under the canvas was electric and the light inside had a strange orange glow caused by the sun beaming through the canvas.

But the teepee had to be seen at night. Lit by fairy lights, a mirror ball and a huge fire pit, it looked spectacular. I've never seen anything like it. It was a photographers dream.

It was a long day, but a fun day set in spectacular surroundings. As a photographer, they day was about as perfect as you get (Kerry's dad's words of advice must have worked "Point and click"). Chris and Kerry are a great couple and I hope they have a wonderful time on their honeymoon in Australia.
